Clearwater is home ground. Some of my earliest Gulf Coast commissions were painted here, and I still take work across the city and out toward the beaches.
Work here has included long road-facing exterior walls composed to read at driving speed, and interior corridor work where oversized botanical forms are carried the length of a circulation space to turn a pass-through into something worth walking slowly.
Clearwater and the surrounding beach communities have a lot of hospitality and tourist-facing businesses, which is exactly where a photographed wall earns its cost back.
Corridors, waiting areas and the awkward leftover walls between doorways are frequently the best value in a building — nobody budgets for them, and they're the surfaces people actually spend time in front of.
On the exterior side, long single-storey buildings along a road are ideal: big shapes, high contrast, legible at speed.
